Ratner juggles a handful of projects

Director eyes Nazis, bunnies, heists and Brazil

Brett Ratner is always juggling a number of upcoming projects. Up next is the Quincy Jones production “Carnavale 3D: The Magic & the Music,” a “Buena Vista Social Club”-style concert documentary to be filmed during Brazil’s annual street party this September. “It’s a way to experiment with 3-D,” Ratner says.

Two pics could possibly come together before spring. One, an untitled Eddie Murphy blue-collar heist comedy set in the Trump Tower, is produced by Brian Grazer and also stars Chris Rock. Ratner imagines a sprawling ensemble with Chris Tucker, David Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier.

The other is a contemporary reworking of the 1978 movie “The Boys From Brazil,” which starred Gregory Peck as Dr. Joseph Mengele and Laurence Olivier as a Nazi hunter.

“I love watching movies where Nazis die,” says Ratner, who was bar mitzvahed at Miami’s Eden Roc Hotel and is a “big supporter” of the Simon Weisenthal Foundation.

Ratner has two biopics lined up. Deep in development is a passion project on the life of Hugh Hefner.

“Hefner is an iconic symbol, like Che Guevara,” Ratner says. “He had a great influence on the sexual revolution and the culture.” Ratner thinks either Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman would make a great Hef.

And assuming that producer Robert Evans ever completes his latest memoir, Ratner has a handshake deal to direct “The Fat Lady Sang.” “He’s a genius,” Ratner says.
