‘Rain’ drops on PorchLight

Producer-distrib to handle int'l rights to pic

PorchLight Entertainment, a 10-year-old Los Angeles-based producer-distrib, has just inked to handle the international theatrical, broadcast and DVD distribution rights of the movie “Rain,” starring Faye Dunaway and Robert Loggia.

“Rain,” which will be licensed this week at AFM, is based on the novel of the same title by V.C. Andrews. It will receive its U.S. debut next April. Pic also toplines Brooklyn Sudano, the daughter of disco diva Donna Summer, and Khandi Alexander, a regular on “CSI: Miami.”

The film was produced by Big Headz Entertainment and Lexi Dawg Media in partnership with Merv Griffin Entertainment.

“I am pleased to be associated with Andrew Neiderman, who guards the V.C. Andrews legacy with such skill and passion. His translation of ‘Rain’ from book to screen has been eagerly awaited by millions of Andrews fans all over the world,” Merv Griffin said.

Porchlight COO William Baumann pointed out that Andrews has a substantial pre-existing fan base and that more than 100 million of his books have been sold in 95 countries.

“Rain” is just the second title to be translated to the screen. The first was “Flowers in the Attic,” which grossed $15 million in the U.S. in 1987.

“Rain” is set in an inner-city project and involves biracial family secrets.
