Film unit to produce two titles a year for duo

Quincy Jones III’s QD3 Entertainment, an indie purveyor of urban fare, has set a multiyear output deal between its affiliate Digerati Holdings and Genius Products, which is 70%-owned by the Weinstein Co.

Under the pact, QD3 will produce two titles a year that Genius will distribute on homevid and will look to acquire finished titles for sole distribution under the QD3 name.

QD3 is one of the top producers of urban direct-to-DVD titles, among them the “Beef” series and Tupac Shakur bio “Thug Angel.” In all, the company said its titles have sold about 1.75 million units.

The first QD3/Genius title, already in production, is “Who Shot Ya,” an unflinching documentary examining the prevalence of violence in hip-hop, featuring prominent rappers discussing their personal experiences being shot. The film will also tackle the larger issue of gun violence and its disproportionate impact on minorities.
