'Die Mauer,' 'Prime Suspect' big winners

BERLIN — Germany and the U.K. were the big winners at this year’s Prix Europa, which honored ARD’s “Die Mauer — Berlin ’61,” a TV movie about the building of the Berlin Wall, with the top fiction award and ITV’s Emmy Award-winning crime drama “Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act,” starring Helen Mirren, with the Special Prix Europa for series, mini-series or serial.

The week-long event wrapped Saturday in Berlin with an awards gala celebrating the best in European TV, radio and Internet. This year the Prix Europe fest had had more productions than ever before with 671 entries from 36 countries, 255 of which were nominated in nine TV, radio and Internet categories.

Picking up a special commendation in the fiction category was Channel 4’s “Longford,” starring Jim Broadbent.

The BBC’s “Rain in My Heart,” Paul Watson’s harrowing documentary examining the lives of four alcoholics, picked up the top prize for non-scripted fare. A special award went to Miroslaw Dembinski’s Polish doc “A Lesson of Belarusian,” while Jean-Michel Carre’s “The Putin System” for France 2 picked up a commendation.

In the Internet category, the BBC’s “Climate Change Experiment” won the Prix Europa Exploration.

Some 1,000 media industryites took part in the Prix Europe fest to select the best productions in the various fields.

The Prix Europa was established in 1987 by the European Cultural Foundation and the Council of Europe.
