Peace calls on ‘Babysitter’

Indie distributor nabs rights to Ross drama

Indie distrib Peace Arch Releasing and Peace Arch Intl. have paid just north of $1 million for world rights to Toronto Film Festival pic “The Babysitters.”

Drama marks the helming debut of scribe David Ross (“The Woods”) and stars Katherine Waterston as a 16-year-old who turns her babysitting service into a call-girl ring for married men after she begins an affair with a customer. John Leguizamo and Cynthia Nixon also star.

“The Babysitters” was produced by O.D.D. Entertainment’s Jen Dubin, Jason Dubin and Cora Olson, with Upload Films and Forensic Films exec producing. Leguizamo’s Rebel Films also produced.

Peace Arch Entertainment Group prexy-chief operating officer John Flock also announced that former Showtime acquisitions exec Larry Greenberg is joining Peace Arch’s L.A. office as senior VP of acquisitions, reporting to Berry Meyerowitz, prexy of Peace Arch Home Entertainment.

“Larry’s mandate is to aggressively acquire projects for Peace Arch to release in all North American media, including titles for our new theatrical releasing arm and our rapidly growing North American home entertainment division,” Flock said.

Peace Arch is gearing up as a theatrical distributor, with Tom DiCillo’s Sundance entry “Delirious” in current release. The Canadian company has been producing and acquiring movies for international distribution.

After debuting “Delirious” at Sundance, the L.A.-based Flock decided Peace Arch had “the resources to start releasing our films ourselves. We think there’s a space to fill for a new distributor in what used to be the arthouse niche occupied by ThinkFilm and Magnolia. A lot of product falls off the table.”

Peace Arch’s next theatrical release is “Watching the Detectives,” starring Lucy Liu, in February. “Chapter 27” follows in 2008.

Last year, Peace Arch acquired Canadian DVD distrib Kaboom Entertainment and the Castle Hill Entertainment library of some 500 titles. Six weeks ago Peace Arch moved into the U.S. DVD market by acquiring DVD distributor Trinity Home Entertainment.
