Short film gala awards top prize to 'Soft'

The Palm Springs Intl. Festival of Short Films has announced its award winners for the 13th edition, which wrapped Tuesday . Fest said attendance jumped by 20% this year.

Best of festival award went to “Soft,” from the U.K.’s Simon Ellis, while Moon Molson’s “Pop Foul” received the grand jury award. “Pariah” by Dee Rees received the future filmmaker award and the student live action award.

A total of $14,000 in cash prizes, $7,500 in Kodak film stock, $6,000 in software prizes and a $60,000 Panavision camera package were awarded. First place winners in four categories are eligible to submit their films to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the shorts categories, and the P.S. Short Fest has screened 53 films that have gone on to receive Academy Award noms over the past 11 years.
