Ensemble honored by Springs Festival

The Palm Springs Film Festival has tagged the cast of “Hairspray” for its ensemble performance award, complemented by a free outdoor sing-along screening of the musical.

Netflix sponsors the screening, to be held Jan. 4 in the city’s Sunrise Park.

The 19th edition of the desert fest, which runs Jan. 3-14, previously announced honors for the film “Juno,” Sean Penn for directing, Jerry Weintraub (the SAG Foundation Award), Marion Cotillard (breakthrough performance) and Emile Hirsch and “Hairspray’s” Nikki Blonsky (Rising Star awards). Trophies will be presented at the Jan. 5 gala ceremony.

Fest expects “Hairspray” cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Allison Janney and Zac Efron will also attend.

More than 230 films from 65 countries will unspool during the 12-day event.
