Distribution company to debut comedy
Odeon Sky Filmworks, the joint distribution venture between Europe’s biggest exhibitor Odeon and TV giant BSkyB, will make Aussie comedy “Kenny” its first release.
Feature debut from the Jacobson brothers, which has scored an impressive $6 million at the Oz box office, was acquired from sales agent Lightning Entertainment. As well as repping Filmworks’ first pickup, the deal marks the first sale of “Kenny” outside its home territory.
The Filmworks theatrical and video distribution venture was established last year in September to acquire smaller pics — often direct from the filmmaker — which may not otherwise get showcased in the U.K.
“Kenny” will play at Odeon and other chain’s theaters this summer before premiering on Sky Movies. As part of the pact, Sky retains all TV rights, including video-on-demand for its broadband download service.
“Securing ‘Kenny’ as our first release under the Filmworks brand is a great start for our venture,” said Filmworks’ topper Tony Miller.
“Kenny,” will be supported by strong publicity and advertising campaigns that will also utilize Odeon and Sky marketing channels, including a national premiere at one of Odeon’s flagship London Leicester Square theaters.
