Monte Carlo unveils nominations

European shows dominate the nominees for this year’s Monte Carlo TV Festival Golden Nymph Awards, unveiled Tuesday.

Nearly two-thirds of the 22 drama nominees hail from U.K. or continental Europe, as do almost half of the 15 shows nominated for comedy.

Up against U.S. big guns “24,” “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” in the drama category will be shows including the BBC’s “Doctor Who,” Gallic paybox Canal Plus’ Corsica-set “Mafiosa” and Spanish TVE-1’s 1970s family drama “Cuentame como paso.”

The U.K. ties with the U.S. for the biggest presence from a single country in the comedy section with Blighty’s “Peep Show,” “Fear Stress and Anger” and “Suburban Shootout” slugging it out with Stateside hits “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “My Name Is Earl” and “Weeds.”

Other countries up for Monte Carlo’s Golden Nymph Awards include Nigeria, with the drama “Edge of Paradise,” and China with drama “The Great Revival” and comedy “Mother’s Tear.”
