Company unveils honorees for Golden Reel

Nielsen EDI, the worldwide leader in box office measurement, is expanding its global B.O. measurement service to include Japan and South Korea, among the largest film markets in Asia.

The Nielsen Co. also unveiled Monday the list of 29 films to be honored with the 2007 Intl. Gold Reel Award in recognition of box office achievement outside North America.

“With the inclusion of the Japanese and Korean markets in our global coverage, Nielsen EDI’s clients will now have the unmatched ability to access daily box office receipts from countries representing 80% of the global marketplace,” said Nick King, president of international for Nielsen Entertainment.

Nielsen EDI already offers studio execs access to real-time or near real-time B.O. information from 17 countries, representing more than 60,000 cinema screens every day. In 2006, Japan was the second-largest filmgoing market in the world, with revenues of $1.8 billion, while South Korea was the sixth-largest, with revenues of just over $1 billion.

Separately, each year Nielsen EDI awards the Intl. Gold Reel Award to those films that have surpassed $100 million in the international marketplace outside North America. This year, 29 films will be honored Friday during the closing night banquet at Cinema Expo Intl. in Amsterdam. Cumulatively, the movies being honored account for over $5.5 billion in overseasbox office receipts.

The honorees, listed by distributor, include Disney’s “Cars,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”; Constantin/Summit “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”; Paramount’s “Flushed Away,” “Over the Hedge” and “Shrek the Third”; Par/Paramount Van-tage/Summit’s “Babel”; Fox’s “Borat,” “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Eragon” and “Night at the Museum”; Sony’s “Casino Royale,” “Click,” “Ghost Rider,” “Open Season,” “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Spider-Man 3”; Universal’s “The Holiday,” “Miami Vice” and “Mr. Bean’s Holiday”; Warners’ “Blood Diamond,” “The Departed,” “Happy Feet,” “Poseidon,” “Superman Returns” and “300.”

Special Platinum Reel Awards recognizing those films that have surpassed $500 million in the international marketplace will be awarded to the two “Pirates” installments and “Spider-Man 3.”

Tim Ganser, Nielsen EDI’s VP, international client service, said: “Of the 29 films being honored, 22 of them grossed more internationally than in North Amer-ica. This is an emphatic affirmation of the importance of the international marketplace, which now accounts for approximately 60% of the global total.”

He added that the company was in essence recognizing this fact by extending the global reach of our services to cover the two largest markets in Asia.
