Newmarket Films is making a rush toward “Bull Rush,” buying Matt O’Neil’s spec and setting up the drama with producers Aaron Ryder and Vertigo’s Doug Davison and Roy Lee.
Newmarket plans to produce and fully finance the pic; Newmarket principals Chris J. Ball and William Tyrer will exec produce. Banner plans to bring on a director immediately with an eye toward shooting in the first quarter of 2008.
Story centers on a self-starter in his late 20s whose life begins to unravel as he tries to gain a foothold in the murky business of hedge funds and participates in weekly anarchy-infused street football games.
O’Neil is currently writing the pilot script “Unsettled” for Spike TV. He previously sold the spec “Street” to MGM.
Newmarket recently co-produced “Prom Night” with Original Films. Its next release is “The Nines,” starring Ryan Reynolds and written and directed by John August. It bows this summer.
Ryder was a producer on “The Prestige”; Davison and Lee, who specialize in remakes, were exec producers on “The Departed.”
O’Neil is repped by UTA and managed by Brian Lutz.
