Mr. Moviefone has gone TV.
One of the most famous voices in the country, “Mr. Moviefone” has signed on to promote Fox series in a series of radio spots that parody the movie listing hotline.
In an ad that ran Thursday, Mr. Moviefone (remonikered “TVfone”) intoned, “For Thursday’s juiciest drama, press ‘2’ now” – followed by a brief promo for “The O.C.” Another ad features Mr. Moviefo–er, TVfone, introducing a clip for “24” by commanding, “For non-stop Jack, press pound NOWWWW!”
Russ Leatherman, the voice of Mr. Moviefone, founded the company in 1989 (along with Rob Gukeisen, Andrew Jarecki and Adam Slutsky). His signature “Hello, and welcome to Moviefone!” greeting has become iconic, and frequently parodied (including by Fox’s own “The Simpsons”).
Fox’s marketing team hooked up with Leatherman/Moviefone as the company (now owned by AOL, which bought the brand for $400 million in 1999) searched for new ways to promote the company.
