Whitsett Hill grabs rights to McGinniss book

Thom Mount’s Whitsett Hill Films arm has snapped up bigscreen rights to “The Delivery Man,” the first book by Joe McGinniss Jr., for mid-six figures.

Grove Atlantic is publishing the novel, about disaffected youths in Las Vegas, in January under its Black Cat label. McGinniss is the son of journo Joe Sr.

“It’s everything we fear,” Mount said, describing the tome as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” meets “Cruel Intentions.”

Story revolves around a failed artist who works as a driver for a teen call-girl ring run by his best friends from high school.

Scribe, who grew up in a genteel college town outside Philadelphia, chose Las Vegas because it’s a fast-growing city filled with rootless characters from diverse backgrounds.

Although NBC adapted his dad’s nonfiction tome “Fatal Vision” into a miniseries in the 1980s, McGinniss didn’t even think about a movie adaptation until the novel was finished and readers started mentioning how cinematic it was.

Whitsett Hill is developing the project under its banner for pics under $10 million. Mount recently formed Reliant Pictures, a division devoted to projects budgeted above $10 million.
