Studio acquires rights with next two films
Continuing its lucrative relationship with Tyler Perry, Lionsgate has signed up with the multihyphenate for his next two films.Lionsgate has acquired the rights to Perry’s “The Family That Preys Together” and “Madea Goes to Jail,” marking the sixth and seventh films Perry has made for the indie. Perry’s latest entry, “Why Did I Get Married?” opened No. 1 at the domestic box office last month on its way to earning $53.4 million to date. Combined, Perry’s films have earned $193 million domestically. Lionsgate unspools his next movie, “Meet the Browns,” over the March 21 Easter weekend. Perry, who writes, directs and acts in most of his films, will direct “Preys” from his original screenplay and also will star. He also will direct “Madea Goes to Jail,” reprising his role as Madea. “Goes to Jail” is based on his stage play of the same name.
