‘Lazarescu’ wins World Cinema award

Romanian dark comedy beat out 'Volver,' 'Cache'

Romania’s “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” won BBC Four’s fourth annual World Cinema award, which celebrates the year in foreign language filmmaking.

Cristi Puiu’s dark comedy beat out “De Battre Mon Coeur S’est Arrêté” (“The Beat My Heart Skipped”), “L’Enfant” (“The Child”), “Caché” (“Hidden”), “Chinjeolhan Geumjassi” (“Lady Vengeance”) and “Volver” for the prize.

The World Cinema award was decided by a panel that included actor Peter Capaldi and critics Peter Bradshaw and Leslie Felperin.

Broadcaster Jonathan Ross hosted the event, which was held at London’s National Film Theatre on Thursday.
