Production unit acquires rights to comic

Intrepid Pictures has acquired feature rights to graphic novel “The Expendable One” and signed Shane Kuhn and Brendan Cowles to pen the screenplay.

Intrepid’s Marc Evans and Trevor Macy will produce.

Action-comedy, created by Jason M. Burns and published by Viper Comics, centers on an average guy who accidentally drinks his friend’s scientific experiment and discovers that his body now has the power to regenerate after any kind of injury. He decides that he must use his new superpower as a force for good but quickly learns that fighting crime is not as easy as he thinks.

Kuhn and Cowles are writing “Twitch,” an action adventure set in the world of videogaming, for Sony and Neil Moritz’s Original Film. The duo will make their directorial debut with the horror film “Drive-Thru,” to be released by Lionsgate this spring.

Burns is slated to direct his first independent feature, “Diary of a Jealous Man,” later this year from his own script.

Two-year-old Intrepid, which has a first-look deal with Rogue and Universal, is producing and co-financing three to five pics per year in the teen comedy, horror, thriller and action genres, targeting the 12- to 29-year-old aud. Upcoming releases include “Strangers” and “Balls of Fury”; it’s also producing “Doomsday” with Crystal Sky and “Couriers” with Jason Netter.
