India, Bangladesh set Oscar pics

'Swopnodonay,' 'Eklyavya' enter foreign race

Announcing their Oscar foreign-language entries, Bangladesh has picked “Swopnodonay” (On the Wings of Dreams) from tyro director Golam Rabbany Biplob while India has gone with “Eklavya: The Royal Guard” from Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Produced by Impress Telefilm and distribbed by Germany’s MDC Intl., “Swopnodonay” will have its U.S. preem in the New Directors section of the Chicago fest Oct. 7.

Pic has done the fest circuit including Toronto, Rotterdam and Shanghai (where it won the new director’s award). Pic centers around a peddler of herbal remedies who finds foreign currency in a pair of second-hand pants and how it changes relationships around him. Popular Bangala singer Mahmuduzzaman Babu stars.

Distributed by Eros Intl., “Eklavya” stars Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan as the titular guard who protects a contempo Indian royal family and its dark secrets.
