Foreign pair in bid for Oscar

'Counterfeiters,' 'Gone' in contention

Stefan Ruzowitzky’s WWII drama “The Counterfeiters” (Die Faelscher) has been selected as Austria’s entry in the foreign-language Oscar race, while Norway has opted for Petter Naess’ comedy “Gone With the Woman.”

“The Counterfeiters” screened in competition at this year’s Berlinale and went on to win a supporting actor prize for Devid Striesowat the German Film Awards. It is the true story of a disparate group of imprisoned artists, financiers and swindlers secretly assembled in a concentration camp to forge millions of pound and dollar notes to support the German war effort.

Pic was co-produced by Hamburg-based Magnolia Filmproduktion, Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures and Vienna-based Josef Aichholzer Filmproduktion.

“Gone With the Woman,” produced by Monster Films, is based on Erlend Loe’s bestseller “Tatt av kvinnen,” about a young man who finds his life is overtaken by a strong-minded young woman.

Pic recently opened the Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund and will have its international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this month.

The deadline for foreign-language submissions is Oct. 1. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will announce the nominations on Jan. 22. The Oscar ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
