BRUSSELS — An animated feature based on long-running Belgian comicstrip “Suske en Wiske” (known Stateside as “Willy and Wanda”) has won e237,500 ($330,000) in production aid from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.
In the same round, Koen Mortier’s punk rock shocker “Ex-Drummer” was awarded $5,059 for promotion.
“Suske & Wiske: De Texasrakkers” (Spike & Suzy: The Texas Rangers) will be a Western adventure for a family audience, animated in 3-D for Skyline Entertainment. Animation will start in November, with a goal of completing the pic at the end of 2008.
Seventeen other projects received aid, including documentaries and experimental art films. The fund runs a separate competition for live-action features.
Among the docs, $55,535 goes to Belgium-based helmer Jawad Rhalib, whose “El Ejido, the Law of Profit” drew the documentary nod at this year’s Fespaco Pan-African Film and TV Festival. Produced by Latcho Drom, “Don’t Cry Mogador” looks at the impact of globalization on a Moroccan fishing town.
