Black comedy 'Duska' selected as entry
Helmer Jos Stelling’s black comedy “Duska,” produced by Eyeworks Egmond, has been selected as Holland’s entry for consideration in the foreign-language Academy Award, making Holland one of the first countries to unveil its Oscar bid.Pic, starring Gene Bervoets, Sergei Makovetsky and Sylvia Hoeks, was chosen by Holland Film and will preem as the opener of the Netherlands Film Festival on Sept. 26. “Duska” is about an enigmatic Russian who turns up on the doorstep of a wannabe film scribe. Pic is a Netherlands, Russian Ukraine co-production. A record 95 countries have been invited to vie for foreign-language Oscar glory at the 80th Academy Awards, set for Feb. 24 at the Kodak Theater.To be eligible, a pic must open in the submitting country between Oct. 1, 2006, and Sept. 30, 2007, and must play in a commercial theater for seven consecutive days. Entry forms and film prints are due to the Acad by Oct. 1. Germany’s “The Lives of Others” took home the prize this year.
