Anderson, Coens to highlight festival
Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” will open the 45th New York Film Festival on Sept. 28, the eve of its commercial bow.“No Country for Old Men,” the well-received Cannes entry from the Coen brothers that Miramax is releasing domestically, will be the festival centerpiece on Oct. 6. Two other notable titles from the Croisette — Palme d’Or winner “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” and “Secret Sunshine” — also made the list. That leaves 20 more films to be selected by the five-member committee for the Film Society of Lincoln Center event, which runs Sept. 28-Oct. 14. Another key berth is closing night. Scott Rudin is a producer on both “Darjeeling” and “Old Men.” Fox Searchlight announced Wednesday it had moved “Darjeeling” up from an October launch to take advantage of the fest slot. That shift means the film’s first paid showtimes will come on a Saturday, but shaving one day off the weekend was a viable tradeoff for Searchlight when it considered the recent track record for the New York event. In recent years, the fest has kick-started the long, Oscar-nommed runs of such pics as “Mystic River,” “The Queen,” “Good Night, and Good Luck” and “About Schmidt.” “Darjeeling” stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. It is billed as an emotional comedy about three brothers reconnecting on a train ride across India. Anderson produced the pic along with Rudin, Roman Coppola and Lydia Dean Pilcher. The film is Anderson’s third to be picked for the New York fest, following “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.” “No Country,” which is also the Coens’ third New York selection, won raves from most international critics in Cannes. A co-venture of Miramax and Paramount Vantage produced by Rudin and the Coens, it is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s book. Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin head the cast. Miramax plans a Nov. 9 bow ahead of a Nov. 21 wide break. “4 Months” was acquired by IFC for its First Take label. “Secret Sunshine,” a Korean film directed by Lee Chang-dong, got a best actress award in Cannes for Jeon Do-yeon.
