RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian producer Diler Associados and TV kidshow host Xuxa Meneghel have ended their 20-year partnership after Meneghel’s 12th feature bombed at the box office.
The most important kidpic franchise in Brazil, Meneghel’s pics together have sold 24 million tickets, an amazing figure by local standards.
But “Xuxa Twins,” which opened in December, sold just 1 million tickets, below the franchise’s historical average.
“I was losing money with the films, and told Xuxa’s representative that I would have to change the production conditions of the film scheduled for this year. He would not accept any change,” said Diler president Diler Trindade.
“Xuxa has a very tight schedule and establishes conditions that raise production costs. Unless it is a big hit, we do not make money with her films,” he added.
The word is Meneghel is negotiating with Conspiracao Filmes. The other option would be an agreement with leading broadcaster TV Globo, which airs Meneghel’s kidshow.
