De Line to produce ‘Shining’ for WB

Novel follows dad who inherits prostitution ring

Warner Bros. has made a preemptive bid for bigscreen rights to “Shining City,” an upcoming tome about a milquetoast dad who unwittingly inherits a prostitution ring.

Donald De Line will produce the project based on Seth Greenland’s novel, skedded to debut from Bloomsbury next year.

De Line said the manuscript, which Sylvie Rabineau of the RWSH lit agency sent out to producers Sept. 28, was a quick, smart read.

“I flew right through it,” he said, praising it for treating working women with respect and dignity.

“It’s a hard world out there — you gotta make a living somehow,” De Line quipped on location in north Africa, where Ridley Scott is shooting “Body of Lies.”

By Tuesday, De Line and Warners had their deal. Andrew Haas, who brought the book to the shingle, will also produce.

“Shining City” is Greenland’s second tome. Sony optioned “The Bones,” his first novel, for John Calley to produce and David Mamet to direct. He also has several screenplay and TV writing credits.

De Line, who is based on the Warners lot, is trying to put together a series of projects ahead of a possible WGA strike, including “Himelfarb” and “The Jetsons” for Warners and “Brad Cutter Ruined My Life Again” for Fox Atomic.
