After art school in New York, Sydney-born helmer Gillespie worked in commercials before tackling his first feature film. Unfortunately, that pic, “Mr. Woodcock,” got mired in reshoots when Gillespie’s comedic taste didn’t match the studio’s. The Aussie’s second outing has proved to be the charm — “Lars and the Real Girl,” the sweetly comedic tale of a distraught man (Ryan Gosling) who seeks innocent comfort from a mail-order sex doll. It was a hit at the Toronto fest in September and looks to have the momentum to ride out kudos season.
