City Lights gets ‘Parents’ rights

Distribution company scores Berlin fest entry

Gotham production-distribution shingle City Lights Pictures has taken U.S. rights to Brazilian Cao Hamburger’s Berlin competition player “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation.”

City Lights Pictures Distribution will release the coming-of-ager theatrically Stateside but no date has been set.

Homevid will be handled by City Lights Home Entertainment via its U.S. video/digital distribution deal struck last December with WEA Corp. City Lights also has domestic TV rights.

U.S. deal on “Year” was struck between City Lights and Paris-based sales agent Films Distribution. Sales figures were not disclosed.

Set in 1970, Hamburger’s arthouse drama turns on a 12-year-old boy suddenly bundled off to his grandfather’s Jewish-Italian Sao Paulo neighborhood as his parents flee Brazil’s military dictatorship.

“Year” was produced by Brazil’s Gullane Filmes and Caos Producoes and Disney’s Latin American label, Miravista.
