Cinematographers honor Edlund

Filmmaker won Oscars for 'Star Wars,' 'Raiders'

Richard Edlund has been tapped to receive the Presidents Award from the American Society of Cinematographers for his contributions to the art and craft of filmmaking.

Edlund will be feted during the 22nd annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards celebration at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom on Jan. 26.

Edlund has won four Academy Awards for his visual effects work on “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Return of the Jedi.”

Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences presented the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation to Edlund. He also earned an Emmy for creating visual effects for “Battlestar Galactica.”

Edlund joined the special effects team at Industrial Light & Magic in 1975 to create visual effects for “Star Wars.” He took over Entertainment Effects Group in 1983 and subsequently renamed it Boss Film Studios.
