Actress, 'I'm Not There'

The daughter of showbiz royalty, French actress Gainsbourg is little known to American audiences (she played a brief role in “21 Grams”), but Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There” should change that. In the kaleidoscopic Dylan biopic, Gainsbourg plays a painter who’s a composite of Dylan’s previous lovers, Suze Rotolo and ex-wife Sara Lownds. As the film’s conscience — a symbol of artistic purity and youthful idealism in the face of all-corrupting fame — this coltish, raven-haired beauty grabs our sympathy immediately, and we feel the sense of pain and loss when her relationship with Dylan alter ego Robbie (Heath Ledger) unravels.
