Canuck helmers selected for Jutra

Kwan, Lapointe to be honored at Genie Awards

MONTREAL — Vancouver helmer Julia Kwan and Montreal director Stephane Lapointe will receive the Claude Jutra Award at the Genie Awards. Canada’s version of the Oscars will be doled out Feb. 13 in Toronto.

The Claude Jutra Award is given in recognition of a pic made by a first-time feature helmer. Kwan is winning for “Eve and the Fire Horse,” about a girl who believes she can change the fate of her family through her imagination. Pic won the special jury prize at Sundance in 2006. “Eve” is up for five other Genie Awards.

Lapointe’s Jutra is for the pic “The Secret Life of Happy People,” a tale of a nerdy guy and his neurotic family. It is nominated for four other Genie Awards.
