Cannes debates future of cinema

Fest plans May 16 forum

PARIS — Cannes will host an opening day forum, “Cinema: Toward the Audiences of Tomorrow,” the fest announced Friday.

Film industry reps, new media players, journalists and sociologists will be invited to “share their views on how the fast evolving digital economy is shaping new roles for directors, producers and distributors,” the fest said.

Among topics to be debated on May 16 by the eight member panel will be: “Will the film theater continue to be the reference for cinema viewing?,” “What will the new medias for cinema and the audiences of tomorrow be?” and “What new promotional tools are being developed and what are the new business models that are emerging?”

The forum’s conclusions are to be reported to all EU ministries of culture on Europe Day, May 26.
