Penn film takes seven nominations

“Into the Wild” led the field with seven nominations for the 13th annual Critics Choice Awards, announced Tuesday by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.

Paramount Vantage’s reality-based film drew nods for picture, director (Sean Penn), writer (Penn), actor (Emile Hirsch), supporting actor (Hal Holbrook), supporting actress (Catherine Keener) and song (Eddie Vedder’s “Guaranteed”).

Pregnant-teen comedy “Juno” was next on the list, grabbing six noms, while “Atonement,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Hairspray” tied with five mentions apiece.

“Enchanted” drew four, including Amy Adams for actress and song (“That’s How You Know”).

Nommed for best picture along with “Into the Wild” were “American Gangster,” “Atonement,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “Juno,” “The Kite Runner,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Sweeney Todd” and “There Will Be Blood.”

The BFCA touts itself as the largest critics org, with 200 TV, radio and online critics. Org was founded in 1995 by Rod Lurie and Joey Berlin.

As with the Globes, the BFCA splits its field in two – comedy and picture – nominating a total of 15 pics between the two categories.

The kudofest will be held Jan. 7 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. VH1 will broadcast the ceremony live, and the cabler aired Tuesday’s nominations – announced by Marisa Tomei – live as well.
