Kosslick expecting plenty of star power
The Berlin Intl. Film Festival on Tuesday formally unveiled the program for its nine sections, which will unspool 373 films from Feb. 8 -18.With titles such as Clint Eastwood’s “Letters From Iwo Jima,” Steven Soderbergh’s “The Good German” and Stefan Ruzowitzky’s Nazi drama “The Counterfeiters,” World War II is again a main topic at the fest, which has released its lineup piecemeal since early December. Berlinale topper Dieter Kosslick is expecting plenty of star power, including Eastwood, Lauren Bacall, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez, Judi Dench, Sharon Stone and director Arthur Penn, who is being honored with a special Golden Bear as the recipient of this year’s Homage. The Berlinale’s European Film Market is showcasing more than 700 films and will host nearly 900 buyers and 259 international film companies. Fest also announced Tuesday that Italian documentary filmmaker Gianni Mina, Hungarian director Marta Meszaros and film journos Ron Holloway and wife Dorothea Moritz will receive Berlinale Camera awards, bestowed on people or institutions to whom the fest is particularly indebted.
