‘Barley’ shakes up Irish awards

Jordon drama wins top prize

“The Wind That Shakes the Barley” nabbed the top prize at the 2006 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, as well as supporting actor for Liam Cunningham and best Irish film.

Another big winner was “Breakfast on Pluto,” which scored director for Neil Jordan, actor for Cillian Murphy, script and hair and makeup prizes.

The trophy for actress went to Eva Birthistle for “Middletown,” while Fionnula Flanagan took home supporting honors for her role in “Transamerica.”

In television prizes, “Stardust” was named best single drama and “The Clinic” was honored as best soap. Ciaran Hinds won actor for his portrayal of Julius Caesar on “Rome” and Ger Ryan was named actress for her role on “Stardust.”

The Irish Film & Television Academy Award winners were announced at the Royal Dublin Society on Feb. 9, 2007.
