Banderas’ ‘Rain’ heads for France

Pic sells to Baltics, Latin America

MADRID — Antonio Banderas’ sophomore pic as a helmer, the coming-of-ager “El camino de los ingleses” (Summer Rain), has been sold to Surreal Films for France and Plan 2 Real in CIS and Baltics.

At Cannes, sales rep Sogepaq sold “Rain” to Babilla (Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Costa Rica) and ICAIC (Cuba).

Pic had previously been acquired by Tartan for the U.K. and Ireland, and Mexico’s Latinofusion.

Produced by the Spanish actor-director’s label Green Moon, along with Sogecine and the U.K.’s Future Films, pic debuted internationally at Sundance in the Premieres Section and won the Europa Cinemas Label for best European film in Berlin’s Panorama section.

Sogepaq also closed pre-sales at Cannes on Spanish auteur Julio Medem’s longawaited psychodrama “Caotica Ana” (Chaotic Ana) to Sponge (Korea), Maywin (CIS and Baltics), Visual Filmes (Brazil), Shapira (Israel) and Babilla (Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Costa Rica).

Before Cannes, Prokino acquired all rights to Germany and Austria, while Tartan Films bought the U.K. and Ireland, and Cineart took Benelux.

Dubbed by Medem as a “feminist fable,” “Ana” centers on an 18-year-old girl who discovers that in past lives she has lived as women who all suffered early and violent deaths.

“Ana” is skedded to bow in Spain later this summer and is expected to show up in fall fests.
