Actor to receive Kubrick Britannia Award

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles will honor Denzel Washington with its Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film at the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards.

“As both an actor and director, Denzel continually takes on challenging projects, and we are thrilled to honor and celebrate his immense talents,” said BAFTA/LA chairman Peter Morris.

Washington stars with Russell Crowe in the upcoming Ridley Scott-helmed “American Gangster”; the story of a drug lord in 1970s Harlem is slated for a November release. He will direct and co-star with Forest Whitaker in drama “The Great Debaters,” based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College who inspired the Texas school’s debate team to challenge Harvard for the 1935 national championship.

Ceremony will be held Nov. 1 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.
