Alvart adds up for ‘Zero’ job

Wells, Blum producing film for specialty arm

Warner Independent Pictures has attached German filmmaker Christian Alvart (“Case 39”) to direct the bigscreen adaptation of Jess Walter’s satirical political tome “The Zero.”

John Wells Prods.’ John Wells and Blumhouse Prods.’ Jason Blum are producing for the specialty arm.

Walter’s book centers on a New York City cop who shoots himself in the head less than a week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Suffering strange memory lapses, he is assigned to work at a shadowy agency where he must analyze every scrap of paper blown across New York when the Twin Towers fell. He suddenly finds himself drawn into a sinister government plot.

Alvart’s “Case 39,” a thriller starring Renee Zellweger, bows in August. His previous credits include “Antikorper” (Antibodies) and “Curiosity & the Cat,” both of which he wrote and directed.

Warner Independent’s upcoming slate includes Paul Haggis’ “In the Valley of Elah” and 2007 Sundance pickup “Clubland.”
