'Shut Up,' 'New Year' take top prizes

Steen Agro’s “Shut Up and Shoot Me” and Socheata Poeuv’s “New Year Baby” won the $25,000 TargetFilmmaker Awards for narrative feature and documentary, respectively, at AFI Dallas Intl. Film Festival.

Rob Stewart’s HD documentary “Sharkwater” won the $10,000 HDNet Award, presented by 2929 Entertainment’s Todd Wagner.

The Audience Awards went to director Steven Sawalich, whose narrative feature film, “Music Within,” opened the fest. Logan Smalley’s “Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life” prevailed in the documentary category, as did Harry Kellerman’s “The Little Gorilla” in the shorts section.

Eric Chaikin’s “A Lawyer Walks Into a Bar” won an Additional Award in the Texas competition, while Alex Weil’s “One Rat Short” and Calvin Reeder’s “Little Farm” won the animation and shorts competitions, respectively.

Inaugural fest was presented by Target and founding sponsor Victory Park. Awards ceremony was held at the W Hotel’s Ghost Bar.
