Gorepic producer-director Brian Yuzna has set up Spanish production-distribution house Magic Lantern, teaming with local real estate magnate Salvador Torrens.
Shingle will make films in both English and Spanish and enter Euro co-productions. It is in talks with a Finnish company.
Magic Lantern is a joint venture with Yuzna’s year-old L.A.-based production and international sales house, Halcyon.
Magic Lantern will focus on genre pics; the Asian shingle on fantasy films.
Lantern is negotiating with a Spanish company to partner on production and distribution, Yuzna said, and looking to close a trio of titles for Spain at Berlin.
Yuzna is also aiming to establish a similar joint venture in Asia with a local partner, launching a production line in Asian films, he said. The Asian deal should be closed before Cannes.
International rights to the films would be put through Halycon.
Halycon is handling rights on 12 titles, including the Yuzna-directed “Re-Animator,” “Bride of Re-Animator” and “Society.” It is taking remake rights on a Spanish film.
Yuzna produced Stuart Gordon’s “Re-Animator” and directed “Bride of Re-Animator.” Quentin Tarantino cites those pics as an influence.
Yuzna transferred to Barcelona in 2000 to launch Filmax’s chiller label Fantastic Factory, a scarefare label, with Filmax chairman Julio Fernandez.
