Young stars are bright sparks

Group selected by EFP's 27 orgs

Young, gifted and European — they are the 25 best and brightest young thesps who were thrown to the press at the European Film Promotion’s Shooting Stars event Monday.

The 10th generation to be unveiled in one lump in Berlin, they were selected by EFP’s 27 national export and promotion orgs and ranged from Austria’s Sabrina Reiter (stand out in local teen slasher “Dead In 3 Days”) to the U.K.’s Kate Dickie.

With hardly a corner of the continent uncombed for talent, newcomer nations this year included Poland (Agnieska Grochowska), Romania (Maria Popistasu) and Slovakia (Tana Pauhofova).

Doubtlessly all hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous alumni such as Franke Potente, Rachel Weisz, Ludovine Sagnier and Daniel Craig, the Shooting Stars also had to demonstrate intellectual chops, fielding moderator and German thesp Kai Wiesinger’s incisive questioning.

Sample: “How do you promote your film?” Answer: “I talk to the press.”

The game was soon up when one thesp, unhappy with his lines, went in for some improv, saying how the Q&A had been pre-scripted

Apart from getting their names and faces in front of the snappers, a full program has the thesps meeting with casting directors and producers.

Fest topper Dieter Kosslick presented their Studio Hamburg Shooting Stars Awards later that evening on the main festival stage. The stars then partied the night away at the tony Hotel Adlon before being driving home in Eos cabriolets courtesy of sponsors VW.
