Walden Media votes for Kwapis

'Surf's Up' writers tapped for teen mayor comedy

Ken Kwapis (“License to Wed”) will direct Walden Media’s untitled teen mayor comedy, set up with Phoenix Pictures toppers Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer.

Story’s centered on a high school slacker who decides to run for mayor to pad his college application credentials and then unexpectedly wins the office.

Walden’s also tapped Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse (“Surf’s Up”) to write the project. The duo’s also writing “Us & Them” with Billy Crystal for Par/Nickelodeon.

Kwapis’ other credits include the upcoming “He’s Just Not That Into You” for New Line and Flower Films, “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “He Said, She Said.” TV work includes episodes of “The Office,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “The Larry Sanders Show” and “The Bernie Mac Show.”

Medavoy and Messer are producers on “License to Wed,” due out July 4 from Warner Bros.
