German drama wins top prize

LONDON — Swiss fest Visions du Reel has given its top prize to Volker Kopp’s German family saga “Sohne.”

The public jury prize went to a Swiss film — Stefan Schwietert’s “Heimatklange” — with a special mention to Alejandro Fernandez Moujan’s “Pulqui, in instante en la patria de la felicidad” (Argentina).

The ecumenical jury bestowed its prize on France’s “Welcome Europa” from director Bruno Ulmer.

The young people’s jury feted Dan Alexe’s “Cabale a kaboul” (Belgium) and Jennifer Baichwal’s “Manufactured Landscapes” (Canada).

The top prize in the New Looks first-time directors’ sidebar was shared by Artchil Khetagouri’s “Akhmeteli 4” from Georgia and Svenja Kluh’s “Das leben ist ein langer tag” (Germany).

The fest, which takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, ran April 20-26.
