Tribeca sets ’08 festival date

Event to hold seventh edition on April 23

The Tribeca Film Festival will open its doors to submissions Sept. 10. The fest, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2002, will hold its seventh edition April 23-May 4.

Last year, the fest earned distrib deals for 17 of the films premiered, including Zak Penn’s poker player mock doc “The Grand,” to be released by Anchor Bay; and “Hellfighters,” a doc about the Harlem high school football team, which landed a deal with ESPN Films. Both movies premiered at the newly added subfest, the Tribeca/ ESPN Sports Film Festival.

Two of last year’s premieres opened theatrically last week — world preem “Descent” and U.S. preem “2 Days in Paris” both sported Aug. 10 release dates.

Early deadline for Tribeca is Nov. 16, with the official deadline Dec. 14. Eligibility information, rules and regs can be found at tribecafilmfestival.org.

Tribeca, created in the hopes of revitalizing lower Manhattan after 9/11, has attracted $400 million of economic activity and 2 million attendees since its inception.
