Katt Williams, Tracy Morgan and Malinda Williams have joined Ice Cube in “First Sunday,” a Screen Gems comedy about two petty thieves who try to rip off a church.
Playwright David E. Talbert penned the script and will make his helming debut with the pic, which begins lensing today. The joint production of Cube Vision and the Firm is skedded for a bow on Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend next year — the same frame Screen Gems debuted “Stomp the Yard” this year.
Cube Vision’s Matt Alvarez is producing, along with David McIlvain, Julie Yorn and Talbert. Ronald G. Muhammad, Tim Story and Stacy Cramer exec produce.
Cast also includes Regina Hall, Chi McBride and Loretta Devine.
Williams most recently appeared in “Norbit” and previously co-starred in “Friday After Next” with Ice Cube. Former “Saturday Night Live” player Morgan stars in NBC’s “30 Rock” and had a voice role in Cube’s “Are We There Yet?”; Williams most recently appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Daddy’s Little Girls.”
Sony’s budget label has had a series of successes with genre fare. Besides “Stomp the Yard,” which debuted in the top spot, Screen Gems scored with “The Messengers” in February. “Vacancy,” its latest release, failed to ignite, however.
Upcoming Screen Gems pics include “Resident Evil: Extinction” and “This Christmas.”
