Scamarcio cast in ‘Eden’

Costa-Gavras making first Greek film in 40 years

Italian thesp Riccardo Scamarcio has been cast as the lead in Constantin Costa-Gavras’ immigration drama “Eden Is West,” which will start shooting in March.

Film is Costa-Gavras’ first in his native Greece in nearly 40 years, after 1969 political drama “Z,” about the Greek military coup d’etat, which won the foreign-language film Oscar.

Co-produced by Costa-Gavras’ Paris-based KG Prods. with Greek outfit Odeon and other European partners, the project with a reported $12 million budget is being sold internationally by Pathe.

Penned by Costa-Gavras with regular co-scribe Jean-Claude Grunberg, “Eden” centers on the plight of illegal immigrants trying to eke out a living in EU countries. Patrick Blossier, another Costa-Gavras regular, will do the lensing.

“Eden” shoot will come after Costa-Gavras’ stint as jury prexy at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
