Saudis prep first film by femme

Wirter-director Mansour to begin shooting in June

Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal’s Rotana is prepping the first feature from a femme Saudi helmer.

As-yet-untitled project from writer-director Haifa Mansour will start lensing in June.

Mansour wrote and exec-produced the first Saudi feature “Keif Alhal” (How Are Things?”), also for Rotana, last year. Pic is playing in the market today and Wednesday.

“It was definitely important for us to show a Saudi woman making a feature and, hopefully, a hit movie,” said Ayman Halawani, Rotana’s head of production.

Rotana execs hope to shoot at least parts of the film in Saudi Arabia, which would be another first.

“We want to film in the south of the country. It’s never been done before but we’ve had indications from the government they’ll let us do it,” added Halawani.
