‘Rose’ blooms at Open Roads

Film to kick off Film Society festival

Mario Monicelli’s “Le Rose del deserto” (“Desert Roses”) will kick off the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Open Roads: New Italian Cinema series on June 6.

Pic, a comedy inspired by the book “Il deserto della Libia” by Mario Tobino, stars Michele Placido, Alessandro Haber and Giorgio Pasotti as members of a WWII Italian medical unit waiting out the war in the Libyan desert.

The seventh annual series, running through June 14 at the Walter Reade Theater, will feature 12 films and a selection of shorts by Italian directors including Giuseppe Tornatore (“La Sconosciuta”/ “The Unknown Woman”) and Angelo Longoni (“Caravaggio”).

Tornatore and “Caravaggio” cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and star Alessio Boni (“The Best of Youth”) are skedded to attend their pic’s screenings on June 7 and June 8 respectively.

Series will also showcase Italy’s latest helmers including Davide Ferrario (“La Strada di Levi” / “Primo Levi’s Journey”) and Saverio Costanzo (“In Memoria di Me” / “In Memory of Me”).

Roberta Torre’s “Mare nero” (“Dark Sea”) will close Open Roads, which is co-presented by FilmItalia and MiBAC.
