Production chief for Film Dept.

Katz catches gig with independent unit

The Film Dept., the newly funded indie outfit run by Mark Gill and Neil Sacker, has named Robert Katz head of production.

Katz worked with Sacker at Yari Film Group, where Katz served as exec VP of production, overseeing titles including “Crash,” “The Illusionist” and “The Painted Veil.”

Gill and Sacker praised him as “the rare production executive who has strong creative skills and a wealth of knowledge and experience in physically producing quality films at reasonable budgets.”

Prior to joining Yari, Katz racked up credits as a location manager, production manager, associate producer, co-producer, exec producer and producer on pics including “Seabiscuit” and “One Hour Photo.” He is a producer of Anthony Hopkins pic “Slipstream,” which screened in January in the Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier section.

The Film Dept. is an international sales, production and finance entity that recently announced $200 million in financing from a consortium of investors.
