‘Paranoid’ makes global deals

Van Sant film sells to 72 territories

LONDON — “Paranoid Park” has made friends worldwide. Gallic mini-major MK2 sold the Gus Van Sant pic to 72 territories at Cannes, it said Wednesday as other distribs also announced deals made at the fest.

Italy’s Lucky Red, Spain’s Vertigo, Blighty’s Tartan, Greece’s DP Skouras, Portugal’s Atalanta and Switzerland’s Monopole Pathe have all picked up “Paranoid Park.” Cineart will handle pic’s release in Benelux territories, with NonStop handling the release across Scandinavia. Russia’s Twister, Poland’s Kino Swiat, Japan’s Tokyo Theaters, South Korea’s Sponge Films, India’s Palador, Argentina’s Alfa and Australia’s Madman also have picked up the only American film to win an award at this year’s fest.

IFC picked up rights for its Stateside release.

MK2 announced deals on two other pics in Directors’ Fortnight: Lebanese helmer Danielle Arbid’s “A Lost Man” and Lenny Abrahamson’s “Garage” have sold to more than 10 territories each, including Spain, Australia, Greece, Korea and Portugal.

Capitol Group’s ThinkFilm Intl. closed a raft of deals at Cannes for Alex de la Iglesia thriller “The Oxford Murders,” starring Elijah Wood and John Hurt, and Italo B.O. hit “My Brother Is an Only Child,” helmed by Daniele Luchetti.

“Oxford Murders,” which will be released by Warner Bros. in Spain and Italy, La Fabrique De Films in France and Odeon Sky Filmworks in the U.K., sold to Germany (Koch Media), Brazil (Imagem), Eastern Europe (Paradise MGN, Vision and Provision), the Middle East (Front Row), Greece (Audiovisual) and Hong Kong (CMC).

Un Certain Regard screener “My Brother Is an Only Child” was sold to the U.K. (Revolver), Spain (Vertigo), Australia (Aztec), Scandinavia (Non Stop Entertainment), Argentina (Alpha), Greece (Rosebud), the Middle East (Front Row), Portugal (Atalanta), Turkey (Filmpop), Hungary (Budapest Film) and Switzerland (Agora).

Pic, which will be distribbed by StudioCanal in France, opened at the top of the box office charts for Warner in Italy.

Other major deals included the sale of Nigel Cole’s “Five Dollars a Day” to Germany’s Koch Media, and a plethora of territories closed for Geoffrey Haley’s “The Last Word.”

Meanwhile, acquisitions of Cannes titles continue in Germany, where local distribs have picked up Camera d’Or winner “Jellyfish” and Paul McGuigan’s sci-fi thriller “Push.”

Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen’s Israeli drama “Jellyfish,” a serio-comic ensemble piece, was picked up by Tubingen, Germany-based Arsenal, which also bought John Waters’ documentary “This Filthy World.”

Distrib NonStop Entertainment also secured Swedish rights to Cannes winner “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days.”
