Sallis' crime novels ready for bigscreen

Parallel Entertainment Pictures has acquired feature rights to James Sallis’ series of Lew Griffin crime novels.

Tomes covered include “Long Legged Fly,” “Moth,” “Black Hornet,” “Eye of the Cricket,” “Bluebottle” and “Ghost of a Flea.” Parallel toppers J.P. Williams and Alan Blomquist are developing the series.

The novels center on a world-weary African-American private investigator who works to unravel missing persons cases in New Orleans while battling personal demons.

“He’s a perfect cinematic character, in the mold of classic noir detectives like Marlowe and Spade, and he’s ready for smart translation to film,” Williams said.

Universal recently bought rights to Sallis’ novel “Drive” for producer Marc Platt.

Parallel financed and produced “Delta Farce,” “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector” and “Witless Protection.” The banner produces Blue Collar Comedy projects along with CMT’s “Foxworthy’s Big Night Out,” upcoming TBS sitcom “The Bill Engvall Show,” and Larry the Cable Guy’s untitled animated series for Comedy Central.
