Actor to produce, direct bilingual drama
Edward James Olmos will produce and direct a bilingual drama about illegal immigration adapted from Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes’ “The Crystal Frontier.”
Olmos Prods. will co-produce the film, under the working title of the novel, with the U. of Guadalajara’s production company, Cinefusion, which owns the rights to the screenplay. Olmos also is seeking financing from Spain.
Spanish scribe Fernando Leon Rodriguez is adapting the novel of nine separate stories about the political and economic forces behind Mexican migration to the U.S. and its impact on the two countries.
“It’s a book that really deserves to be understood, because it tells you what is going on right now,” Olmos said, adding that the film would not include all nine stories.
Olmos will probably star in the film, but no other talent is set.
Shoot is tentatively scheduled for 2008, and there is no distribution deal yet.
Project was announced Friday night at the Guadalajara Film Festival, Mexico’s biggest fest.
Olmos is also directing another border-themed project, Showtime miniseries “The Flood” (working title), which will shoot this summer.
