Munich fest strikes up the ‘Band’

A number of Cannes screeners also playing

BERLIN — Eran Kolirin’s Israeli Cannes screener “The Band’s Visit” will open this year’s Munich Film Festival, which runs June 22-30.

The award-winning comedy about an Egyptian police band that gets stranded in a small desert town in Israel will be released locally by Munich distrib Concorde.

A number of Cannes screeners are unspooling in Munich this year, including Concorde’s Palme d’Or winner “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days” and Argentinean director Lucia Puenzo’s “XXY,” about a troubled teenage hermaphrodite.

The event, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is honoring filmmakers William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Werner Herzog.
